The "Cougar Paw" is a hand signal often used by Houston fans, and it dates back to the mid-1950s when Houston first competed against their in-state foe, the University of Texas. It looks like this is only a tradition for football, but man, I hope there are people dressed like this at the game Friday. Whenever their football team scores a touchdown, the Frontiersmen run across the field with the university's flag and the Flag of Texas. School spirit is also led by a group of students known as " The Frontiersmen," who dress in cowboy hats, Wrangler Jeans and dusters. Now, two (fake) Cougars lead the crowd: Shasta and Sasha. The first mascot was named Shasta, but the tradition of having a live mascot ended after the death of Shasta V. Houston's mascot is the Cougar, which was originally chosen based on the name of the school's student-run newspaper, the Daily Cougar. Their colors are listed as " scarlet red," to represent "courage or inner strength to face the unknown," and " albino white," to represent "the purity of spirit embodied in helping one's fellow man." It's the third-largest university in Texas, with nearly 44,000 total students enrolled. The University of Houston in located, not surprisingly, just southeast of downtown Houston, Texas.
